Meet the Owners

Sandy Spring Builders was founded in 1982. The company is the shared vision of Richard Mandell, Phil Leibovitz and Mimi Brodsky Kress – three talented and experienced individuals who work personally with each client.

Sandy Springs Builders

Richard Mandell - The construction detail guy

Over the past 30+ years, Richard Mandell has built over 300 custom homes for individuals in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. The Mandell name is known throughout the area for homes with exceptional details and unique features. He has incredible patience and enjoys sitting with clients to help them make the selections for finishes that will make their home special.

Phil Leibovitz - The market-savvy Bethesda insider

Phil Leibovitz has an extensive professional career in land development and homebuilding in Virginia and Maryland. Phil has more than 30 years of experience and has completed over 1,500 lots and built over 1,000 homes. It is virtually impossible to find a builder with his winning combination of construction smarts, communication skills, and the ability to comfortably ’connect’ with his clients.

Mimi Brodsky Kress - The business details person

Mimi Brodsky Kress began her professional career in homebuilding and then spent ten years in light commercial construction. She has managed the construction of hundreds of homes and has become established as a leader in both the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the local Maryland–National Capital Building Industry (MNCBIA).  Mimi coordinates all of the paperwork to make it less of a hassle for Sandy Spring Builder clients.

Community Involvement

Sandy Spring Builders is a pro-active community builder. We sponsor schools and non-profits throughout the area (Bethesda Elementary, Somerset Elementary, Westland Middle School, and more). We built a school library pro-bono at the Abram Simon School in a very poor section of Southeast Washington. We were the builders and developers of the Shirley Povich Baseball Field at Cabin John Park which is enjoyed by thousands of Montgomery County baseball fans yearly, and we helped restore two youth baseball fields in the Washington area. We support and work for Habitat for Humanity, and have given both money and time to many community non-profit organizations including Imagination Stage, the Children’s Inn at NIH, and Act Two Performing Arts, just to name a few . We are politically active and are environmentally-conscious builders who live, eat and work amongst our neighbors. We co-founded Renewing Montgomery to improve the dialogue between builders and neighbors during construction in established neighborhoods. We believe in being a part of our community… we believe in giving back to our community.
